NH MMI Narayana Superspecialty Hospital celebrated World Organ Donation Day emphasizing that organ donation is a gift to individuals suffering from terminal organ diseases and is essential for medical treatments. According to the WHO Global Road Safety Report 2015, India witnesses over 200,000 deaths due to road accidents, with 40-50% of fatalities resulting from head injuries, making the injured individuals potential organ donors.

Highlighting that even if 10% of deceased accident victims became organ donors, there might not be a practical need for living individuals to donate organs. Numerous examples exist where organ donation has saved lives. In this context, the hospital organized the event to raise awareness. More than 100 individuals pledged to donate organs, and students from MMI Nursing College created posters to promote organ donation.

In the program, Dr. Sunil Dharamani (Senior Nephrologist), Dr. Varun Sharma (Urologist), Dr. Rakesh Chand (Head Cardiac Anesthesiologist), Dr. Pradeep Sharma (Head Critical Care), Dr. Gaurav Joshi (Gastro Surgeon), Tapani Ghosh (Facility Director), Dr. Akshay Khiledar (Senior Medical Superintendent), Ravi Bhagat (Marketing Head), Dharma Rao (General Manager), and Sweta Patras (Principal, MM Eye Nursing College) were present.

Dr.Sunil Dharmani praised this initiative, stating that there are numerous myths among people and a lack of awareness, leading to significantly lower rates of organ and tissue retrieval from deceased bodies in India compared to developed countries. Many viable organs are wasted due to this, which could have saved lives. He highlighted the need to raise awareness about organ donation and its importance.

Dr.Rakesh congratulated those who pledged to donate organs during the event and mentioned that organ donation can offer a new life to many individuals. Dr. Varun highlighted the importance of accurate information and suggested forming groups in cities to share information about organ donation periodically. He also emphasized the significance of obtaining correct information about organizations involved in organ retrieval and transplantation across the country.

Dr.Pradeep mentioned that in Chhattisgarh, the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO) is a leading networking organization established in 2021. SOTTO Chhattisgarh coordinates with the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) and oversees organ and tissue retrieval services.

Mr.Tapani Ghosh-Facility Director mentioned that NH MMI Hospital will continue running such campaigns to raise awareness and award prizes to participants for spreading the message of organ donation.
