Positive India:Raipur:
In a groundbreaking achievement, doctors at MMI Narayana Hospital, Raipur, have successfully performed a lifesaving cardiac intervention on one of the youngest and smallest patients in Chhattisgarh.

A two-day-old girl, one of a pair of twins and weighing just 1.9 kg, was evaluated by Dr. Kinjal Bakshi at a neonatal hospital in Raipur after she was found to have dangerously low oxygen levels. Further examination revealed that the baby was suffering from valvar pulmonary atresia, a critical congenital heart defect in which the valve connecting the heart to the lungs is completely blocked.

The only reason the baby was surviving at the time was due to a naturally occurring fetal connection called the Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA), which allows blood to bypass the lungs in the womb. However, the PDA typically closes within the first week of life. Without intervention, closure of this vessel would have led to a fatal lack of oxygen.

Recognizing the urgency, the medical team planned to open the blocked heart valve to restore blood flow to the lungs. The baby was promptly shifted to MMI Narayana Hospital on May 9, 2025.
Under anesthesia, administered by Dr. Rakesh Agarwal, the expert cardiology team led by Dr. Kinjal Bakshi and Dr. Sumanta Shekhar Padhi-Lead & Sr.Interventional cardiologist-MMI Narayana performed a delicate catheter-based procedure in the hospital’s state-of-the-art cath lab. With precision and expertise, the doctors successfully opened the blocked pulmonary valve, allowing normal blood flow to the lungs.

Following the procedure, the baby made an excellent recovery and has been shifted back to the neonatal hospital, where her twin brother is being treated for prematurity, and her mother is recovering from delivery.

“This is a moment of great joy for the family and for all of us at MMI Narayana hospital,” said Dr. Bakshi. “To our best knowledge, this is the smallest and youngest child to undergo a successful cardiac interventional procedure in Chhattisgarh. We expect her to go on to lead a healthy, normal life.”

The successful procedure underscores MMI Narayana Hospital’s commitment to providing world-class cardiac care, even to the most fragile and high-risk patients, using advanced technology and an experienced multidisciplinary team.
