14-Year-Old Boy Undergoes India’s First Retrievable Leadless Pacemaker Implantation at MMI Narayana Hospital, Raipur
Breakthrough procedure offers safer, long-term cardiac care for young patients with complex heart conditions

Positive India:Raipur:
In a landmark achievement for pediatric cardiac care, MMI Narayana Hospital, Raipur, has successfully performed India’s first retrievable leadless pacemaker implantation on a 14-year-old boy, marking a major advancement in the treatment of complex congenital heart conditions.
The patient had previously undergone Intracardiac Repair (ICR) with RV to AP conduit at the age of two Year at another hospital (in Delhi). At five years age, he developed Complete Heart Block (CHB) and underwent a dual-chamber pacemaker implantation on 29 October 2024 at MMI Narayana Hospital, becoming the youngest to undergo such a procedure in Central India.
In February 2024, the child required a pulse generator replacement. However, due to a suspected nickel allergy, he experienced recurrent extrusion of the pulse generator (PG), necessitating approximately four re-positioning procedures. Considering his age and the need for future interventions after battery depletion in 16–17 years, the cardiology team opted for a retrievable leadless pacemaker.
The procedure was successfully performed on 21 August 2025 under the leadership of Dr. Sumanta Shekhar Padhi, with the support of proctor Dr. Balbir Singh, and under general anesthesia. The device, developed by Abbott Ltd., was implanted smoothly, and the patient was discharged the following day in stable condition.
“This achievement represents a remarkable leap in pediatric cardiac care in India. The retrievable design ensures that future device replacement will be safer and less invasive, giving the child a brighter, healthier future,” said Dr. Sumanta Shekhar Padhi, Senior Consultant – Cardiology, MMI Narayana Hospital, Raipur.
The success of this pioneering procedure was made possible by the combined efforts of the cardiology team (Dr. Kinjal Bakshi, Dr. Sunil Gouniyal, Dr. Snehil Goswami), cardiac surgical team (Dr. Hari Kumar PK, Dr. Mohammed Wasim Khan), and cardiac anesthetic team (Dr. Arun Andappan & Dr. Rakesh Rajkumar Chand & Dr Dharmesh Lad).
By successfully performing such a complex, first-of-its-kind procedure, MMI Narayana Hospital demonstrates its ability to handle rare and challenging cardiac cases, especially in children. The achievement also paves the way for more minimally invasive cardiac solutions in the country, ensuring improved quality of life and better long-term outcomes for patients.
MMI Narayana Hospital’s Facility Director Mr Ajit Bellamkonda Congratulate all the stake holders and said, “This extraordinary case not only reflects clinical expertise but also highlights the importance of recognizing heart attack symptoms early, accessing a PCI-equipped hospital, and having a well-organized emergency care infrastructure.”
MMI Narayana Hospital, Raipur continues to be a regional leader in Health Care from last 14 Years and its cardiology department is like a pillar offering 24×7 Cath Lab support and expert care for life-threatening cardiac conditions.
