NH MMI Doctors Perform Emergency Angioplasty Amid Cardiac Arrest And CPR!
To perform angioplasty under ongoing CPR is extremely rare and complex.

Positive India:Raipur:
In a remarkable demonstration of clinical precision and teamwork, Dr Sunil Gouniyal (Senior Cardiologist) & his team has successfully revived a 48-year-old woman who had suffered a sudden cardiac arrest following a heart attack at MMI Narayana Hospital, Raipur. This was a rare and high-risk scenario that demanded both rapid action and advanced cardiac intervention.
The patient, with no prior risk factors, arrived at the Emergency Department with chest pain lasting for about an hour. Initial tests confirmed an acute heart attack. However, before further interventions could begin, she collapsed from a sudden cardiac arrest, a critical condition where the heart abruptly stops beating, halting blood flow to the entire body.
Dr Sunil Gouniyal & his team immediately initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), including uninterrupted chest compressions and multiple electric shocks. Despite 30 minutes of persistent effort, there was no return of spontaneous circulation.
In a bold and rare move, Dr Gouniyal & team decided to shift the patient to the Cath Lab for an emergency angioplasty, even as CPR continued en route. Performing a complex angioplasty while the heart is not beating and chest compressions are ongoing is a highly challenging procedure, demanding precise coordination and rapid execution.
Remarkably, within minutes of the blocked artery being successfully opened, the patient’s heart started beating on its own. She was transferred to the ICU, regained consciousness within two hours, and was off ventilator support by the next day. After five days of care, she was discharged in a fully stable condition, with no damage to any vital organs.
“This was one of the most critical cases we’ve ever managed,” said Dr Sunil Gouniyal (Senior Cardiologist), MMI Narayana Hospital, Raipur.
“To perform angioplasty under ongoing CPR is extremely rare and complex. It required perfect coordination between the ER and Cath Lab teams. The fact that she walked out of the hospital without complications reflects the strength of our emergency systems, cardiac care protocols, and team readiness.”
Dr. Gouniyal specially thanked Dr. Rakesh Chand (Senior Consultant & HOD – Anaesthesiology) and Dr. Dharmesh Lad (Consultant – Anaesthesiology) and Dr. Ajitesh Roy (Junior Consultant – Emergency Medicine) said that without their support this would not have been possible.
MMI Narayana Hospital’s Facility Director Mr Ajit Bellamkonda Congratulate all the stake holders and said, “This extraordinary case not only reflects clinical expertise but also highlights the importance of recognizing heart attack symptoms early, accessing a PCI-equipped hospital, and having a well-organized emergency care infrastructure”.
MMI Narayana Hospital, Raipur continues to be a regional leader in cardiac emergencies, offering 24×7 Cath Lab support and expert care for life-threatening cardiac conditions.
